WebbThe bodhran is an Irish frame drum with an open side so one hand can be placed against the inside of the head to control the pitch and timbre. It is struck either with the bare hand or a variety of “tippers” and is said to have been developed as the “poor man’s tambourine” by farmers who couldn’t afford the metal. WebbIt is 41cm in diameter and 8.5cm deep. The wood of the rim is 5mm thick. The ends are overlapped for a distance of 20cm and are fastened with nails. The skin reaches up the side of the instrument for about 5cm and is secured by a row of tacks. The skin has historical damage including a large jagged tear to one side of the centre.
